Digital Eye Strain: 8 Ways to Make Screen Time More Comfortable

Digital eye strain can make a long day at a computer, tablet, or phone feel uncomfortable. Common complaints include tired or dry eyes, temporary blur, headaches, and difficulty refocusing after extended near work. Screens are part of daily life for many people, but a few practical adjustments can make them easier on your eyes.

The goal is not to avoid every screen. It is to build habits that support comfortable vision and to recognize when persistent symptoms deserve a professional evaluation.

1. Follow the 20-20-20 rule

Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This brief change in focus gives your eyes a break from sustained near work. A timer, calendar reminder, or natural pause between tasks can help make the habit automatic.

2. Blink fully and often

People often blink less frequently or incompletely while concentrating on a screen. That can allow the eye’s surface to dry out and contribute to burning, grittiness, or fluctuating vision. During breaks, make several slow, complete blinks. If dryness continues, ask your eye doctor which options are appropriate for you, especially if you wear contact lenses.

3. Position your monitor comfortably

Place the monitor roughly an arm’s length away and position it so your gaze is slightly downward rather than upward. Increase text size instead of leaning closer. Your chair, desk, and screen should allow your head and neck to stay in a relaxed, balanced position.

4. Reduce glare and balance the lighting

Bright windows, overhead lights, and reflections can make screen viewing more demanding. Reposition the monitor, adjust blinds, or soften harsh lighting when possible. Set screen brightness so it feels similar to the surrounding room rather than much brighter or darker.

5. Improve contrast and readability

Use a clear font, comfortable text size, and enough contrast between the words and background. Clean fingerprints and dust from the screen. These small adjustments can reduce squinting and help you maintain a more comfortable viewing distance.

6. Pay attention to air and humidity

Fans, air-conditioning vents, smoke, and very dry indoor air can worsen dry-eye symptoms. Avoid directing moving air toward your face and consider a humidifier if the room is consistently dry. Staying hydrated supports general health, although ongoing dry-eye symptoms may need more specific care.

7. Use the right vision correction

An outdated prescription or uncorrected focusing problem can make computer work more tiring. Some people benefit from glasses designed for their usual screen distance. A comprehensive eye exam can check your prescription, eye coordination, focusing ability, and overall eye health.

8. Know when to schedule an eye exam

Schedule an evaluation if discomfort is frequent, worsening, or interfering with work, school, reading, or driving. Persistent blur, double vision, significant pain, light sensitivity, or recurring headaches should not simply be blamed on screen time. Seek urgent care for sudden vision loss, a dark curtain or shadow, new flashes with many floaters, or severe eye pain.

Build a screen routine your eyes can handle

Comfortable screen use usually comes from several small changes working together: regular distance breaks, complete blinking, better lighting, good posture, and up-to-date vision correction.
