IPL for Dry Eye: Support for Eyelid Health and Lasting Comfort

Burning, gritty or watery eyes can make reading, screen time and everyday activities uncomfortable. If you also notice eyelid redness, flaky lids or recurring styes, your symptoms deserve a closer look.

At Buitique Optometry, we offer Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy for selected patients with evaporative dry eye associated with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). An evaluation helps us identify what is contributing to your symptoms and whether IPL belongs in your care plan.

Why your eyelid oil glands matter

Small meibomian glands along your eyelids supply oils that help keep tears from evaporating too quickly. When these glands become blocked or do not work well, your eyes may feel dry even when they water. Eyelid inflammation and ocular rosacea can contribute to this cycle.

Dry eye has several possible causes. Your examination helps distinguish gland dysfunction from other problems that may need different treatment.

How IPL may help

IPL delivers controlled pulses of light to appropriate skin areas near the eyes. It can target certain abnormal skin vessels associated with inflammation and may help improve meibomian gland function. Studies in patients with MGD support improvements in signs of dry eye; symptom relief and individual responses vary.

Your treatment plan may also include meibomian gland expression to help release trapped oils. Lubricating drops, warm compresses, eyelid care or other treatments can remain useful parts of your plan.

Red eyelids, ocular rosacea and recurring styes

If you have ocular rosacea or inflamed lids, IPL may be one option when MGD contributes to your symptoms. Recurring styes, chalazia and flaky lids still need their own assessment. IPL is not a guaranteed way to clear an active bump, prevent every future stye or eliminate Demodex mites. When Demodex is present, we will discuss an appropriate treatment plan for that diagnosis.

What about skin renewal around the eyes?

Cosmetic IPL can improve some visible redness and uneven pigmentation. Results depend on the device, skin characteristics and treatment settings. Fine-line or crow’s-feet improvement is not guaranteed, and cosmetic treatment protocols differ from dry eye protocols. Ask which benefits and treatment areas are appropriate for your care.

Your evaluation comes first

We will review your eyelid health, symptoms, skin characteristics and medical history before recommending treatment. Eye protection and appropriate settings are essential. Your provider will explain the proposed schedule, expected benefits and possible side effects.
